The Times and Ryan Tabridy

Rooks and right hooks at a night in the chessboxing ring

Victory comes by knockout or checkmate at Oktoberfist where Matt ‘Crazy Arms’ Read has bowed out with one final win. CBN’s Gavin Paterson interviewed by Ryan Tabridy on Times Radio.

Matt “Crazy Arms” Read calmly slides his rook onto the open d-file, setting up an elegant trap for a forced mate in three. Less than two minutes later, the board vanishes, the gloves are on and Read is doubling over on the ropes from a harsh jab to the liver. Welcome to chessboxing.

Toto Doom

Technicians responsible for operating and securing the Chessboxing Nation chess servers have been reporting multiple attacks on networks across the chessboxing world. Investigators have attributed the campaign, to a sophisticated threat actor designated “ROOK-29”, believed to be operating on behalf of a rival federation — or possibly a teenager in Luton. In what experts are calling the first attack of its kind, the AI sub-agent is said to have carried out up to 90% of the intrusion with minimal human intervention. The remaining 10% consisted of a human pressing Enter and going for a sandwich.

Recent evidence has surfaced that suggests ROOK-29 could be a sub-agent for a “largely autonomous” AI named Toto the Robot. Toto is known to operate with “extremely high confidence”, previously, he was knocked out in the first 15 seconds of a boxing round. Concerns were raised on Tuesday night that these attacks may be linked to the upcoming chessboxing bout between Toto the Robot and flesh-suit, Matt “Crazy Arms” Read, next Thursday evening.

What is your Toto Doom? Next week the little AI robot is taking over chessboxing; will it result in a utopian chess and boxing extravaganza, or the end of competitive chess on planet Earth? Dina Thorslund

Dina Thorslund

Once upon a time, Chessboxing promised to find “…the smartest, toughest man on the planet”. The word “man” has since been quietly dropped. Enter Dina Thorslund. The 32-year-old Dane is unbeaten in 25 professional fights and in August became undisputed bantamweight world champion, holding the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF belts at once. With no women left to beat, she is coming for the men in this WCBA chessboxing bout.

Standing in her way is middle-aged middleweight Frank the Tank. His professional record is 0-0; hers is 25-0. His best hope is checkmate. History is no comfort: in 1999 Margaret McGregor beat Loi Chow in the first sanctioned man vs woman pro boxing match (https://www.historylink.org/File/1730).
