Chessboxing Grades

Grade 1: White

You are a complete beginner with no sparring experience. Understand how the chess pieces move.

Grade 2: Yellow

You know how to stand with guard, basic footwork and can throw a jab. Conditioned spar, jab only. Understands simple chess strategy and castling, min ELO 600.

Grade 3: Pink

You can move in the ring with rhythm, basic defences, jab and cross. Conditioned spar, straight shots only. Understands simple openings and strategy, min ELO 800.

Grade 4: Green

You can move in the ring with rhythm, manage range effectively, advanced defences (slipping), jab, cross and hooks. Conditioned spar, straight shots and hooks. Understands openings enough to reach the middle game with even material, understands when to swap out, can manage thier clock, min ELO 1000.

Grade 5: Blue

You can move well in the ring with rhythm, manage range effectively, advanced defences, jab, cross, hooks and uppercuts. Safe in the ring, experience of open sparring. Understands chess well enough to avoid blunders, min ELO 1200.

Grade 6: Purple

You can move well in the ring with rhythm and good footwork, manage range effectively, advanced defences, and has mastered at least one combination. Completed 10 open sparring sessions inc 3 consecutive 3 min sparring rounds. Competant board skills, with good knowledge of openings, middle game and end game tactics, min ELO 1400.

Grade 7: Red

You can move well in the ring with rhythm and excellent footwork, manage range effectively, advanced defences, and has mastered combinations and counter punching. Extensive sparring experience, more than 20 sessions. At least one chessboxing fight. Mastered every element of chess including pawn play, min ELO 1500.

Grade 8: Black

You can move well in the ring with rhythm and excellent footwork, manage range effectively, advanced defences, and has mastered combinations and counter punching. Extensive sparring experience, and at least 2 chessboxing fights. Mastered every element of chess including pawn play, min ELO 1700.

Once you have your black wraps, you are ready to take on all comers. However, you can still improve and obtain Dans for each 100 ELO points you achieve. The best way to obtain your grades is to compete in an Ocho event HERE.

Chessboxing grades are sanctioned by the WCBA.
