The start to the international chessboxing season is always a special night and 2016 promises to be one of the best yet, being staged at one of the world’s iconic sporting venues, York Hall in Bethnal Green, London.
We have a stellar line-up of fighters and entertainers including new faces and established stars of the chessboxing scene.
Headlining the show, Finnish economist Lars Bjorknas travels from Helsinki Chessboxing Club to face Londoner Dan Chandler in what is sure to be a massively entertaining heavyweight contest.
Matt “Crazy Arms” Read, one of the busiest chessboxers on the circuit is back in the ring against an old foe Chris “The General” Levy. Read has a beaten Levy in their two previous encounters but Levy claims to be in the best form of his life as he aims to end his losing streak.
Also on the undercard in the 70kg category, advertising copywriter Mark Reed from Bristol faces London-based financial journalist Lewis McLellan. And in an all Hertfordshire duel at light-heavyweight, Nick “Showstopper” Cornish from Welwyn Garden City will do battle with newcomer Rob “Danger Man” Fletcher from Letchworth.
Chessboxing is a wild mix-up of two of mankind’s oldest sporting obsessions. Opponents slug it out on the chessboard and in the ring in alternating rounds of chess and boxing until there is a winner by checkmate or KO, whichever comes first.
Chessboxing has been described as both nerd-fighting and the ultimate sporting challenge of the 21st Century. We say, who cares? This mix of brains and brawn makes for utterly compelling, never to be forgotten entertainment.
